Bank Securities Portfolios Stabilize in 2Q 2024

As of 2Q 2024, the total securities portfolio of U.S. banks remains stable at approximately $5.5 trillion, consistent with figures from 2Q 2023, according to data compiled by KBRA Financial Intelligence (KFI). The proportion of HTM securities, which increased significantly from about 34% in 4Q 2021 to a peak of nearly 48% in 3Q 2023, has since declined. By 2Q 2024, HTM securities accounted for approximately 44% of the portfolio, marking a 391-basis point (bp) decrease from 3Q 2023.

For 2Q24

Among the largest U.S. banks, Goldman Sachs Bank USA saw the largest increase in HTM securities both quarter-over-quarter (QoQ) and year-over-year (YoY) at 23% and 121%, respectively. On the other hand, Morgan Stanley Bank, N.A. experienced a YoY decline of about 3% by offloading $700 billion in HTM securities from 2Q 2023.
